PE-Newsletter This year saw the deepening of the financial crisis. With this came an increased awareness of business ethics and corporate responsibility. In addition, the issue of climate change continued to drive the sustainability scene.

Graham, can you explain what the PAS 2050 is all about?

The PAS 2050 has been prepared to specify the requirements for the assessment of GHG-Emissions of products. It helps companies to understand the entire GHG emissions of their products along the life cycle of goods and services, identifying both sources of emissions and opportunities for cost reduction. It also provides the basis for organizations that wish to communicate the GHG emissions of their products.

CDM Project in South Africa

At the beginning of November PE INTERNATIONAL held a stakeholder meeting at Samancor's Middelburg Ferrochrome operation in South Africa. This was part of a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project looking at a new technology to increase the energy efficiency of the operation. Further carbon credit projects on the compliant and voluntary market are in preparation for South Africa and India.

Accelerating data input: GaBi DfX goes up a notch!

GaBi DfX is the software for compliance and sustainable product development. With the latest version of GaBi DfX, we took a look at one of the most time consuming parts of LCA studies of complex products – entering product information. The resulting GaBi BOM (bill of materials) Import feature allows you to import product information directly into GaBi DfX from your bill of materials.

This tool significantly accelerates modeling time resulting in shorter completion time for LCA studies and increases efficiency up to 90%. The GaBi BOM Import interface is capable of importing standard file Excel formats including txt and csv files, although client-specific interfaces can also be generated on demand.

In September 2008, more than 30 GaBi representatives from PE subsidiaries and sales partners from all around the globe met for the annual “Train the Trainers” event. This included 3 days of intensive and enthusiastic discussions on environmental trends, product optimization and further improving our efficiency and competency in customer support.

New alliance at the Bosporus

The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme will be UK's new mandatory carbon scheme, targeting around 10,000 organisations including wholesale, food, hotels, government departments, financials, state-funded-schools and hospitals. All will need to measure, calculate, report and manage their carbon, as emission allowances will have to be bought starting 2010. Leading consulting and accounting companies have warned that complying with this scheme will be a real challenge for many companies.

Easy listening about climate change is being provided by the German journal ‘Logistik heute / Logistics today’ through the publication of an audio book describing the changes in the sector forced by climate protection requirements. Logistics companies, as well as consultants, describe approaches to handling the new challenges in strategy and practice and even how to profit from the issue. Brazilian Industries supporting LCA activities

The Federation of the Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP), understanding the importance of LCA for the competitiveness of the industry in the national and international market, organized a seminar on “The role of the industry in the development of the LCA of products” in October 2008.

Associations, syndicates, industries, consulting companies, banks, governmental institutions as well as NGOs attended the event. Afonso Gomes introduced the Brazilian LCA Association.

PE opens offices in India and China

Recently PE INTERNATIONAL opened two new offices focusing on the Indian and Chinese markets. PE offers the whole range of services through these new offices in both countries, with some focus on Energy Efficiency and CDM project development.

Contracts with some of the largest companies in these countries are currently under discussion, involving sustainability consulting, LCA, GaBi and SoFi solutions. PE can also directly support initiatives for capacity building on sustainability in each country.

The Indian office is located in Bhilai, right in the center of the country. Rajesh Kumar Singh oversees the activities.
