Dear reader,

Americas Market Exploding! Over the last year we have seen a rapid increase in life cycle assessment. It is what I call the
Wal-Mart, Al Gore and US Green Building Council (USGBC) effect.
PE Americas is well positioned to realize this market expansion. PE INTERNATIONAL (PEI) and Five Winds International joined to work
together to expand the Americas market. That is happening. Building off of Five Winds’ leadership position in sustainability
implementation and PEI’s leadership position in LCA modelling and GaBi, PE Americas is becoming the premium go-to firm for life
cycle assessment support.
With this issue we celebrate how best practice pays off! Interface, Badenova and Johnson Controls have all proven that taking
direct action to improve allround sustainability not only enhances the core integrity of operations and encourages progressive
product innovations, but it also transforms the way in which they are perceived by the public.
Cordially,
James Fava
Managing Director Five Winds Int. and PE Americas

Financial and Non Financial Reputation
|
|
| |
|
»It takes a long time to develop a reputation, one announcement to lose it, and years to get it back. A company can get it
back, but management never does.«
By Rudolf X. Ruter, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Ernst & Young AG Germany
Today’s investors have different priorities when making an investment decision than in the past. This paradigm shift is a response
to the numerous accounting scandals and the related corporate failures. The reputation of a number of major companies has suffered
due to the inadequacy of their FINANCIAL reporting, in the worst cases, allegations of fraud or insider transactions have destroyed
the reputation of established firms and their management boards.

A study is being undertaken on behalf of the energy service provider Badenova. The intention of the study is to
find out whether the introduction of annual ‘energy crops’ in crop rotations or the perennial production of energy crops are an
adequate and economically viable option when compared to conventional food crops. The study takes into account the need to reduce
nitrate leaching, as well as to reduce fossil energy demand, global warming potential and other environmental impacts.

CSR – a promoter for innovation and performance
|
|
| |
|
The Dutch Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Consultancy Company, Borger & Burghouts have completed their
research on Inclusive Innovativeness within Dutch Companies. In conjunction with the University of Twente they developed a CSR
business case for organisations. The outcome of the research indicates that CSR is the main vehicle for innovation processes in
organisations and not only leads to a more broad corporate performance in the ecological and social field but also increases the
financial performance and leads to product and process improvements. These innovations are essential for the sustainability of the
organisation, the environment and the society.
