The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is an element in the Kyoto Protocol that generates credits – Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) – from emission abatement projects in developing countries.

CERs can be used to achieve compliance with the EU ETS and other emission trading schemes, such as those in Europe, Canada and Japan.
