ERFMI, the European Resilient Flooring Manufacturers Institute has with the support of PE INTERNATIONAL developed a free online calculator able to calculate comprehensively produced EPD-Data for all soft floor coverings at the push of a button, based respectively on building type and lifespan.
Environment Product Declaration compulsory in the EU – reams of information necessary
Determining the sustainability of a building proves to be complex when working over international borders, namely in Europe where almost all countries have varying systems and certificates. The basis of such a building certificate relies on a continuous flow input data into the building project, the so called Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which occurs within the planning phase when architects are already necessary. The data is based on internationally valid ISO-Norms and documentation of the qualities of various building materials.
Alongside environmental compatibility, the resources and energy demanded as well as the projects lifespan and maintenance must be accounted for. Every certificate requires producers to prepare and supply countless amounts of country specific information.
Flooring Industry is a frontrunner for sustainability
For over 15 years, the flooring industry has concerned itself with the theme of Life Cycle Costs (LCC) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) – as well as with the monetary estimation of LCC. Twelve producers, covering ca. 85% of the European production of floor coverings, got involved with ERFMI and supplied their data for a study making the EU-wide Estimation system available. For ten selected general flooring types from Linoleum, the gummy over heterogeneous and homogeneous Vinyl flooring to Safety flooring copious amounts of data was collected and evaluated by PE INTERNATIONAL.

PE was then able to generate models for the Calculator and ascertained the weighted average input data for each family of floor covering products. These results laid the groundwork for the online calculator, with which in just a few steps is now able to generate the specialized Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for each type of flooring over a determined usage period.
