Approach/Execution

With Life-Cycle-Assessment (LCA) resources consumption, energy consumption, resulting emissions in air, water and ground during the lifecycle phases of manufacturing(including the entire pre-chain as well as in-company), use and disposal/recycling were analyzed and evaluated.

In this example, the lifecycle of a set of tires with dimension 185/70 R13 was analyzed from the mining (of coal) to the end of use (after 160,000 kilometers). The tires were changed every 40,000 kilometers. The newly developed tires have a 10% lower roll resistance and thereby save 1.6% in fuel. The average consumption of the car on which the tires were fitted is 9.1 liters/100 km.
