Procedure for the Energy Efficiency Analysis of a Steel Plant:

  1. Collecting the data regarding energy carrier and energy consumer.
  2. Building the model inside GaBi 4 software using parameter.
  3. Building parallel to the process chain of the considered steel plant the same process chain using the best available technologies.
  4. Two different analysis can be done

         a)    comparison on plant level (Figure 1)

--> the steel producer can identify in general his position against the BAT

          b)    comparison on shop level (Figure 2)

--> the steel producer can identify the highest energy saving potential (not the highest energy consumer has the highest reduction potential).

      5. Identification and development of energy saving measures using BREF
         documents and IISI

By carrying out the energy efficiency analysis the steel producer can reduce the energy consumption in a more efficient way and can establish a CO2 strategy for the future to be in compliance with regulations and the Kyoto protocol.

This analysis method can be applied in the non-ferrous, precious metal as well as rare earth industry

Paper:

Society of Automobile Engineering (SAE) Total Life Cycle conference 1998 Graz

Life Cycle Engineering of a Three-Way-Catalyst System as an Approach for Government Consultation

On behalf of Degussa AG (now Umicore) and Mercedes-Benz AG, PE/IKP conducted the worldwide first Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) study to the overall benefits of a catalyst system through a whole life cycle. The paper handles the environmental pollution due to the production of the catalyst materials (e.g. precious metals, rare earth) and the production of the catalyst itself as well as the reduction of the emissions during the use phase. Additional cost aspects related to the production of the catalyst and the advantages/ disadvantages (e.g. higher fuel consumption) for the customers are shown. As the main subject the paper deals how to use the results of the study as a basis for the discussion with governmental organizations about future emission limits. Therefore the paper shows recommendations to the government, which emission reduction measurements are sensible and which cause more pollution than the car catalyst system is able to reduce.

Material availability scenarios for the precious metals are presented, which are important information for design requirements.
